The web is moving away from http://yourdomain.co.uk to https://yourdomain.co.uk.
There are many reasons why this trend will continue and here are just a few:
- Google has announced that HTTPS will affect Google search results in the future, starting now!
- Google Chrome browser will start to make it obvious that non-HTTPS websites are insecure.
- WordPress has announced that some of the features released in 2017 will only be available for websites using HTTPS.

Why do you need HTTPS?
We all know that the Internet is not a very safe place. There are literally thousands of bots and hackers waiting to grab your personal information every time you go online. They are after your address, your phone number and your credit card information.
Most companies that are concerned about website security will use the secure protocol HTTPS when processing confidential tasks. The HTTPS protocol uses SSL (Secured Socket Layer) encryption to protect their site and visitors.
An SSL Certificate will prevent you losing or leaking sensitive data. Online shoppers expect an SSL Certificate, but even if you don’t have an e-commerce site, displaying a SSL certificate on your site helps customers feel safer doing business with you – knowing that your identity is verified and their personal data is secure.
Is it perfect?
No, the security certificate system is not perfect. But launching a website that is not encrypted is putting everyone at risk.
An SSL certificate will show your domain name, company name, address, city, county and country. The expiration date of the certificate is displayed along with the name of the certification authority responsible for issuing the certificate. When a browser connects to a secure site it will check that the certificate is still valid and issued to the website you are viewing. If it fails any of these checks then a warning will be displayed letting the visitor know that the site is not secured by SSL.
